Since its founding on June 28, 2004, by Aaron Olds and a few friends, the Hoewa'a Dallas Outrigger Canoe Club has promoted a healthy lifestyle through Hawaiian outrigger paddling. For over twenty years, our club has embodied Hawaiian culture and spirit, combining a deep love for family, nature, community, and competition—all while having a great time and making our members feel connected to a larger community.
After gathering a small group of friends, Aaron traveled to California to acquire the club's first canoe, the "Hoku Kau Kahi," embarking on a journey filled with adventure and stories that have become part of our club's folklore.
As an amateur non-profit organization, Hoewa'a competes against other canoe clubs throughout Texas, North America, Hawai'i, and beyond—wherever the current takes us. Our team paddles in six-person canoes, participating in races that range from quick three-minute sprints to grueling 36-mile competitions. Over the years, we have achieved first-place wins in Texas, Arizona, Tennessee, and Hawai'i, showcasing our competitiveness and success.
Our diverse membership, consisting of adults of various ages, races, and genders, reflects our inclusive and welcoming community. We share a passion for team paddling and embrace the Hawaiian values of 'Ohana and Aloha, which are central to the ancient sport of Hawaiian outrigger canoeing. Additionally, we are dedicated to preserving and promoting the environment and frequently spend time outside the canoe volunteering, giving back, and honoring our community. If you share our passion and values, we invite you to join us and become part of our community.
